INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLATION OF AUTOMOBILITY 901 HAND CONTROLS.
STEP 1: Remove the lower retention strap from the accelerator arm by unclipping the fastex clip and install as shown in illustration below.

Attach the strap to an existing bolt on the firewall of the
vehicle, this bolt is indicated on the spec sheet or find a solid bolt between
the brake arm and the throttle arm. Make sure the strap cannot be impeded by any
obstacles. When you brake with your control handle you pull against this strap
so you don't have pressure on your throttle arm. Make sure it is secure.
(If spec sheet is not provided, find a threaded bolt on the firewall or
under the dash. Make sure the bolt is secure enough to withstand a severe
brake application. The strap should be secured in an area somewhere
between the steering column and the accelerator pedal area.)
Not all vehicles are the
same under the dash and around gas pedal.
The illustrations below show a few possible ways of installing the
lower retention strap for the hand controls.
STEP 2: INSTALL THROTTLE BLOCK
Attach the throttle block on
the accelerator arm as shown in the
illustrations below. Using the allan key provided with your hand
controls.
- Check with your spec sheet to determine the exact location on your
specific vehicle.
- Throttle block may have to be cut depending on application. The
throttle block can also be removed from the rod end bearing and
turned sideways as needed for different applications.
- The throttle arm tube can also be inverted for different applications
Install the throttle block on to the accelerator arm as
indicated in illustration (2) on your spec sheet.
(The accelerator arm should be placed into the serrated groove of the throttle
block when possible. This throttle block is designed to fit different
shapes and configurations of accelerator arms, it can be removed from the
swivel and reinstalled at 90 degrees from the position it is now in. The
length of the swivel end bolt can also be adjusted by turning it in or out of
the throttle block).
These diagrams show a few
possible positions that the throttle block may be installed.
STEP 3: INSTALL LOWER BRAKE ASSEMBLY

The V clamp goes on from the back of the brake arm. - The
wedge plate goes on from the
front, (some European cars with wide brake arms will not use this wedge
block).
- The swivel plate goes over the bolts and centers on the wedge block pin. This
plate swivels
to adjust for the brake arm or to raise or lower the control handle. The brake
arm retention
spring goes to the top.
Install the lower brake block assembly onto vehicle's brake
arm as indicated in illustration (3) on your vehicles
Automobility specs sheet.
(Be sure that you measure the distance between the bottom of the brake pad and
the bottom of the brake block
and install at the distance identified on the spec sheet. The U clamp goes
on the back of the brake arm then the
wedge block on the front, the swivel plate must then be placed on the centre of
the wedge block so the pin comes
through the center hole which allows the front part to swivel. You can
adjust the horizontal range of the handle by
turning this swivel plate in either direction. Do not over tighten the
cross bolt that holds the brake arm to the
swivel plate as if it cannot move it may cause your brake lights to remain on
when you release the brake.)

Not all vehicles have the
same brake pedal arms.
The illustrations below show a couple possible ways of installing the
lower brake assembly.
STEP 4: ATTACH STEERING MOUNT
Lift the brake arm and attach the column mount as shown in illustration below.

The brake arm assembly should go as high up the brake arm as
possible without interfering with anything else
in that location. Make sure every part of this hand control system is free
moving and not touching the bolster pad
or in contact with anything under the steering column.
Attach steering column mount straps around column as indicated in illustration
(4) on your Automobility spec
sheet for your vehicle. Make sure that the rubber spacer is in place and
the nut that fits between the eye ring
and the tower or inside the tower (check your spec sheet illustration (4).) is
in its proper location. There is very
little mechanical stress on this assembly, be sure that you tighten it as firm
as you can and that the brake rod
slides without binding through the eye ring.
(The straps are made out of nylon and will not break when tightening)
Lock down the camlocks and secure with the safety loops.

Bring the unsown end of the
strap over the steering column to the right side bottom, thread the
strap through the tower and back up through the camlock buckle. (On some
vehicles the strap will
come down behind the gear shift lever or ignition switch and once threaded will
come back up on
the front side over the lever or switch,) Pull the strap until the tower
and straps are secured to the
steering column, lock the camlock buckle and slide the security ring over the
camlock handle.
Thread through the second camlock and secure. Be sure that this tower strap is
tightly in place
before attaching the Velcro strap to the brake block.
** Cam Locks are movable and can be moved and set where needed on the steering column.
STEP 5: INSTALL CONTROL HANDLE

Attach the accelerator arm to the control handle.
Connect the control handle
to the clevis at the top of the brake arm using the shoulder bolt with the
allan key end coming up from the bottom and
the 3/8ths lock nut attaching to the top. Make sure this shoulder bolt is
completely through the handle insert and not hanging up part way.
Connect the throttle side by removing the black knob and the silver nut sert,
put the rod end bearing on the handle, then secure it with the nut sert then
the black handle knob.
The control handle should give you full
throttle and full brake without touching
anything.
Full throttle should be at about ¼" away from the back of the steering
wheel.
Some vehicles will not be able to tilt the steering wheel and some will have
limited tilt adjustment.
Attach the control
handle to the brake arm clevis (be sure that you slide the retaining bolt into
the clevis from the bottom up and that it slides all the way through without
catching on the lip inside the handle on the way up, secure with the lock
nut.) Now attach the accelerator arm to the
control handle and tighten the black knob to secure. (Remember, the eye
ring should always remain between the clevis and the sliding bolt cover.)
STEP 6: ATTACH BRAKE RETENTION STRAP
Attach lower brake
retention strap to short upper brake retention strap. IMPORTANT: This
strap must be snug but not overly tight as if too tight it will pull down on the
throttle and cause
the engine to race.
Attach brake spring retention strap,
this is the velcro covered strap that comes off the bottom of the tower. It goes
through the D-Ring from the top and attaches to itself. Make sure it is tight
but not extremely tight.
Place the brake spring tension strap through the D ring on the
brake block spring and fasten it so that there is
enough tension to pull the brake back to the off position. In cases where
hitting a bump (with extra weight of the
control on the brake) the brake might depress enough to allow the brake lights
to come on or to disengage the
speed control. This strap can be easily adjusted, when necessary, to put more or
less back pressure on the brake
pedal. REMEMBER: do not over tighten cross bolt that connects the brake
block to the brake arm as this could
cause a binding effect that could make your brake lights to stay on.
STEP 8: SAFETY CHECK!

You are now ready for many years of happy motoring.

Automobility hand controls are
manufactured out of .304 stainless steel, the castings are
investment wax casted 304 stainless steel, the webbing is 10,000 lb. test nylon
webbing.
This system will last a lifetime. When you change vehicles contact us and we
will give
you instructions to move your Automobility system to your next vehicle.
Automobility
hand controls meet and exceed all permanent hand control safety standards and
although built to last a lifetime, still
a delicate instrument to make your driving mobility
more pleasurable.
